This journey is about reading the New Testament in ninety days by reading three chapters daily. I did not start on time but I’ll catch up with time. So today I read the book of John, chapter 13 – 15.
So here are my thoughts on it.
First of all, there will always be traitors in so many groups. From verse two, I realized that Judas wasn’t really the enemy, he was a vessel that the enemy (the devil) was using. Verse nine showed the humor in Peter, just seconds ago he had refused to have his feet washed and now he wanted even his hands washed as well, hahahaha! Verse 34 brings to light the bed rock of Christianity, LOVE. Love of God and our fellow man.
Going to chapter fourteen, I was a bit confused about that statement “I am the way, the truth and the life” I understand how it applies to the spiritual but I couldn’t relate it in our everyday life. i would love for someone to help me out here. In verse 11, we see a secret to why Jesus excelled so much in His ministry; this was because he abided in the Father and also let the Father abide in Him. Jesus taught and led by actions not just words, we should emulate this. Verse 12 raised a question in my mind, if we as Christians are to be doing greater things than what Jesus did, why it is that only a few Christians such as strong men of God are being able to do this. Why are the rest finding it hard to do even half of what Jesus did, talk more of greater? In verse 15, we see that obeying God’s word is a way of saying and showing we love God. Verse 19b jumped right at me for no particular reason, it says “You will live because I live”.
So we are now at chapter 15. The first few verses showed me that only in Christ can we be our best and live our best life now. Only by staying attached to Him can we attract favor and impact our world positively. Only by living in Him can we find fulfillment and our destiny. A condition brought to light for answered prayers is also abiding in Him and letting Him abide in us by studying His word, meditating on it and most especially doing it.
Talking about persecution, we won’t always be accepted for our stand as Christians, when you refuse to lie you are seen as the spoil sport. It’s not easy being the different one, but we are consoled because Christ was different and so we are called to stand out, to be the shining light in darkness, to be the salt of the earth.
In wrapping it all, we see Christ teaching patiently’ His time now is limited but there’s still so much to say, so just like a will, or a last request before death, these are his final messages. He stresses certain points, it sounds like he’s saying you can forget any other thing but not these things. He emphasizes on love, He keeps saying Love each other, love each other. He also tells us several times how to show our love for God that is by obeying His commandments, doing what He says. He also keeps reminding us that we won’t be alone, that we are capable of doing what He has called us to do because He will send His Holy Spirit to be our helper, our enabler, our personal adviser on everyday living in a Christian way. These final messages are to be taken very seriously.
